Abstract

Purpose: This literature review paper aims to comprehensively analyze and synthesize existing research on the socio-economic impacts of tourism on local communities. It seeks to identify and understand the various factors that influence these impacts, shedding light on both positive and negative consequences. The primary objective is to provide a consolidated resource for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners interested in enhancing the sustainability and well-being of tourism-dependent localities.


Theoretical Framework: The study is grounded in a multi-disciplinary theoretical framework, drawing from economics, sociology, anthropology, and environmental studies. It employs a systems-thinking approach to examine the complex interplay of factors affecting local communities in tourist destinations.


Design/Methodology/Approach: This review adopts a systematic and rigorous approach, utilizing databases, academic journals, and grey literature to gather a wide range of empirical studies, case analyses, and theoretical perspectives. The methodology includes a comprehensive synthesis of the literature, employing thematic analysis and critical assessment to discern trends and gaps.


Findings: The synthesis of existing literature uncovers a nuanced web of socio-economic impacts in tourism-driven communities. Positive effects include increased income, employment opportunities, and infrastructure development, while negative aspects encompass issues like cultural erosion, environmental degradation, and economic volatility.
